چکیده

The intention of this paper is to highlight and demonstrate the importance of three ontological assumptions in information technology for development (ITD) research; structure, agency, and causality. We argue that these three assumptions are 1) inherent in all social theory, and thus in ITD research, and 2) underdetermined by the current dominant philosophical approaches to research. Therefore, irrespective of one’s adopted philosophical approach we argue that researchers need to reflect on these assumptions. To expedite this reflection, we present a model of the relationships among philosophy, social theory, and research methodology that illustrates the centrality of these three assumptions in the process of research and theorizing. Then, this essay engages in a retrospective analysis of an ongoing longitudinal interpretive research study in India to consider the relevance of these assumptions and show how they are implicated in research and the development of theory.

Survey of Money- Output Causality: Case Study of Iran, Based on Vector Error Correction Model (VECM)

This study investigated the dynamic relationship between money, prices and output in a multivariate structure of casualty analysis in Iran for the two period of 1969 to 2012 (entire period) and 1989 to 2012 (sub-period). This statistical framework has been projected for situations where causal links may have changed over the sample period. Results of a three-variable Vector Error Correction Mod...

Agency, Structure and the Power of Global Health Networks

Global health networks—webs of individuals and organizations linked by a shared concern for a particular condition—have proliferated over the past quarter century. In a recent editorial in this journal, I presented evidence that their effectiveness in addressing four challenges—problem definition, positioning, coalitionbuilding and governance—shapes their ability to influence policy. The editor...

Influence of atmospheric circulation patterns on dust transport during Harmattan Period in West Africa

This study has used TOMS AI as well as the reanalysis dataset of thirty-four years (1979-2012) to investigate the influence of atmospheric circulation on dust transport during the Harmattan period in West Africa, using Aerosol Index (AI) data, obtained from various satellite sensors. Changes in Inter-Tropical Discontinuity (ITD), Sea Surface Temperature (SST) over the Gulf of Guinea, and North ...

Aggregate and Disaggregate Energy Consumption Relation with GDP: Evidence for Iran

Abstract I n this paper we investigated total energy consumption and its individual forms (oil, natural gas, electricity, renewable energies and coal) relationship with real gross domestic product (GDP) in Iran. We employed Hsiao’s (1981) methodology and annual data which cover 1967-2010 for investigation. The empirical findings indicate there is bidirectional causality ef...
